ROGER TOWNSHEND, of South Raynham., He was a prosperous free tenant by the 1390s. M 1st Eleanor. M 2nd Matilda. He led a group of tenants from South Raynham who petitioned the chancellor over a dispute over common grazing rights, 1413. He made his son John an unconditional grant of his personal property, 1435. Died c. 1435. He had issue:
JOHN TOWNSHEND., of South Raynham., M 1st Agnes, d. of William Gigges, of Wighton, Norfolk. M 2nd Isabel. As a tenant of Thomas, Lord Scales, he farmed the manor of Scales in South Raynham between the mid 1440s & the early 1460s. He acted as a Trustee for Thomas, Lord Scales. Died 1465. Bur. St. Mary's Church, Raynham. He had issue by his 1st wife:

Sir ROBERT TOWNSHEND, Kt., J.P., of Ludlow, Shropshire., Educ. at Lincoln's Inn. Appointed a Justice of the Peace for Norfolk, 1526. In the early part of the reign of Henry VIII he became eminent in the practise of the law, & was retained by Queen Jane Seymour. Appointed Serjeant-at-Law, June 1540, & King's Serjeant-at-Law, 1541. He joined the royal army which invaded France in 1544. Elevated to the Bench as Justice of Chester, 21 May 1545. Knighted by King Henry VIII at Hampton Court Palace, Trinity Sunday 1545. Mentioned in his father's will, 31 July 1551. M 1 Oct. 1516 Alice (Bur. 13 Nov. 1576 at Ludlow as "Lady Alice Townshend"), d. of Robert Poppy, of Twyford, Norfolk, & his wife Anne, d. of John Mordox (See POPPY). Died 8 Feb. 1555/6 at Ludlow. ROBERT TOWNSHEND, of Ludlow & Llanvary, Shropshire., Born 1535. Mentioned in the will of his uncle Giles Townshend, 15 April 1552. M 30 April 1571 at St. Mary's Aldermanry Church, London, Anne (Bapt. 5 Oct. 1553 at St. Peter's, Westcheap, London. Mentioned in her husband's will, 13 Feb. 1613/4. Mentioned in the will of her son Nicholas, 13 June 1614), d. of John Machell, Alderman & Sheriff of London, & his wife Joan (who M 2nd Sir Thomas Chamberlain, Kt., M.P., Ambassador to Spain in 1562), d. of Henry Lodyngton (See MACHELL). He was a catholic recusant and together with his brother-in-law, Ralph Dutton, of Hatton, was investigated in 1581 for his relations with the Jesuit priest & missionary to England, Edmund Campion. He was mentioned in state papers of Sept. 1609 as being granted protection from arrest for his religion. Will dated 13 Feb. 1613/4. "Gentleman". Bur. 28 Aug. 1614 at Ludlow. Went to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, landed 15 Oct. 1858, & then to N.Z., landed at Lyttelton, 1862, with his brothers Frederick & Edwin. Later joined in N.Z. by his brother Alfred, 1865.
