We turned our backs for a minute!

That's Taxi at the wheel, Sally beside him and Storm at the back.

GHOSTWING 'D' LITTER

A litter is being planned for late in the year for our 'Storm' CH Ghostwing Ash Brackenfire CGC. She will be 3 years old and this will be her 1st litter. We have not yet decided who the sire of the litter will be, although we have a shortlist of possible studs in mind. Her brother 'Ash' Ghostwing Ash Brandyman was the sire of our 'C' litter. See more of Storm on 'The Bitches Page.'

'SERIAL'  BREEDING!

Please do your homework before buying a puppy. Consider the age of the bitch and the frequency of her litters before taking a puppy from 'breeders' that blatantly exploit their bitches. I have come recently to know of a registered bitch that has given birth to 27 puppies in 16 months. The bitch is 7 years old! In my opinion this is shameful and inhumane!

If your dog is being put to stud, ask for the breeding history of the bitch. Do not be party to inexcusable behaviour like this.

More importantly, how can this exploitation be stopped in the first place? I believe that the only motivation for this behaviour is money. I do not wish to contribute to the problem by condemning the unlucky puppies by having them rejected as pets.

But we have to start somewhere. If we could stop these serial litters from being registered the 'breeders' will not be able to fetch the prices that they do.

For breeding guidelines which are acceptable around the world, please contact any of the many Breed Clubs that are active in South Africa, particularly the Weimaraner Klub of the Transvaal. See the LINKS page.

It has been argued that in the wild a bitch would whelp litters frequently and regularly. But in a pack only the alpha bitch would be having litters, the rest of the bitches are only providers of food and protection whilst also taking on the role of babysitters. The survival rate of the pups in the wild is always under threat from other preditors, weather conditions and diseases.

When the alpha bitch's position is usurped by a stonger and healthier bitch, the batton is passed on.

There are no puppy booms in the wild!

We are blessed (or cursed) with a breed of dog that, (whilst being our life and joy), is particularly demanding and strongwilled. There simply aren't enough people who understand them and who are prepared to spend their lives dealing with the challenges and demands that the Weimaraner presents.

For those that do come to understand and love the breed, the reward is the absolute love and companionship of a single-minded, stubborn, frustrating, manipulative, devoted, protective, energetic, playful, in-your-face, under-your-feet devil of a dog.

The catch-22 situation is that to get to know a Weimaraner you have to have the endurance to put up with the negatives before and while you are enjoying the positives.

If you aren't sure you want a Weimaraner, do yourself and the dog a favour and don't get one!!
