It is believed that the Beothuck Indians were one of the first inhabitants of Newfoundland and their spitz type dogs crossed with the mastiff type dogs brought to the island by the Vikings may have had some influence on the Newfoundland breed. |

| The
Vikings are recorded as having a "Large Black Bear Dog"; perhaps
the Newfoundland is a unique blend of the Mastiff and Malossian dogs crossed with the Spaniel type dogs from Spain, who knows? All we do know is that we are all grateful for the wonderful breed that we now know as the Newfoundland, as the saying goes " If it's not a Newfoundland it's just a dog"!!! |

One
thing is for sure, that the Newfoundland has always been used in the service of man, as a draft dog, a water dog aiding fishermen, as a ships dog and in more recent times as a water rescue dog, their natural live saving instincts are legendary. |
